And with unspoiled nature virtually non-existent in the Netherlands, the thought that every shovelful of earth in the Netherlands has – at sometime – been worked by man, is a grim one indeed. Dekkers paints what is left of no man’s land: no man, no animal on the land, no bird, no house; a landscape that has no need of anything outside itself.
